Deck and Patio Build in Aberdeen, MD

The homeowner wanted an outdoor space that could handle everyday use while also standing out visually. To make that happen, we focused on balance—clean lines, consistent materials, and smart use of space.

Project Scope Included:

  • Custom paver patio installation

  • Composite deck construction with wide staircase

  • Retaining wall installation to manage elevation

  • Integrated low-voltage lighting throughout

We began by installing approximately 536 square feet of Techo-Bloc pavers, using Blu 60 HD2 for the main field and Squadra in Onyx Black as a bold inlay accent. This combination added contrast and visual interest without overwhelming the space.

To address the yard’s slope and maintain a single, usable surface, we constructed a matching Shale Grey retaining wall, keeping the entire patio on one level and dramatically improving flow and functionality.

Above the patio, we built a custom composite deck measuring roughly 19.5 feet wide by 8 feet deep, using Owens Corning WearDeck in Sand, finished with white vinyl railings and a cocktail rail for an extra refined touch.

Overcoming Site and Seasonal Challenges

Elevation Changes

One of the biggest challenges on this property was the change in elevation across the yard. Instead of breaking the patio into multiple awkward tiers, we opted for a single retaining wall solution. This approach preserved usable square footage and created a more natural, open feel.

Material Coordination

To achieve a cohesive, boutique-style finish, we carefully matched materials and colors across all elements. By using Techo-Bloc products for both the patio and retaining wall, we maintained consistent Shale Grey and Onyx Black tones, tying the entire space together visually.

Awkward House Bump-Outs

Another major design hurdle came from the home’s layout. Two interior bump-outs and the cellarway created a funnel effect that would have turned a traditional stair landing into a narrow pass-through.

Creative Solutions and Smart Planning

Our solution was to design a full-width deck paired with a grand 19.5-foot-wide staircase. This eliminated choke points entirely and transformed what could have been wasted space into a standout feature. The wide staircase now doubles as additional seating during gatherings and enhances the overall openness of the deck area.

Custom Deck Design:
By extending the deck across the full width of the rear elevation, we maximized usability and ensured smooth transitions from the home to the outdoor space. The composite decking offers durability, low maintenance, and a clean, modern aesthetic.

Lighting That Steals the Show

The lighting package became one of the defining features of this project. We installed 18 strategically placed lights throughout the deck steps and patio, ensuring every corner of the space was illuminated.

This wasn’t just about safety—it was about atmosphere. Once completed, the lighting instantly became a neighborhood conversation piece. Neighbors stopped by to compliment the space, and the homeowner even received inquiries from friends who were inspired by how striking the backyard looked after dark.

Final Result: A Backyard Designed to Be Enjoyed Day and Night

In the end, this Aberdeen, MD deck and patio project transformed a challenging layout into a one-of-a-kind outdoor living space. The finished design flows seamlessly from the home onto a spacious composite deck, down a grand staircase, and onto a beautifully lit paver patio below.

By overcoming elevation changes, solving layout constraints, and integrating cohesive materials and lighting, we created a custom outdoor space that feels intentional, open, and inviting. It’s a backyard that doesn’t just look good—it works beautifully and is ready to be enjoyed at any time of day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Understand why our local expertise, quality craftsmanship, and customer-focused approach set us apart.

The paver patio measures approximately 536 square feet and was designed as a single, continuous surface to maximize usable space despite the yard’s elevation change.

We used Techo-Bloc Blu 60 HD2 pavers for the main patio area with Squadra in Onyx Black as a decorative inlay. The retaining wall was built using matching Techo-Bloc materials in Shale Grey to keep the entire design cohesive.

The yard had a noticeable slope, and splitting the patio into tiers would have created awkward transitions and reduced usable space. A single retaining wall allowed us to keep everything on one level, resulting in a more open layout and better flow.

The deck was built using Owens Corning WearDeck composite decking in Sand, paired with white vinyl railings and a cocktail rail for added style and functionality. Composite decking was chosen for its durability and low maintenance.

The staircase spans approximately 19.5 feet wide. The home’s layout included multiple bump-outs that would have created narrow walkways with a standard stair landing. A full-width staircase eliminated those choke points and now doubles as additional seating.

We installed 18 integrated lights throughout the deck steps and patio. The lighting enhances safety while also creating a dramatic nighttime atmosphere that truly sets the space apart.

Absolutely. In this project, the lighting became a defining feature. It elevated the entire design, improved nighttime usability, and even drew compliments from neighbors and visitors who saw the space after dark.

Yes. Every project we build is fully custom. While this design worked perfectly for this Aberdeen home, materials, layouts, lighting packages, and features can all be tailored to fit your property and lifestyle.
